Lets find the basics first before we make it more complex then it really is.

Is there a Truck manual? if not then are in the correct place asking the pros's lol. =X (not a pro, so Can't help you on that).

but did throw my 2 cents on the manual try. :moose:

Some of the new trucks have synthetic oil. I would check with a dealer in your area.

50 wt synthetic gear lube is specified by Eaton Fuller, and that's what we use in the ones at work.

You can use Roadrangers synthetic transmission oil CD50, or comparable SAE 50 Synthetic Manual transmission oil. Should be a Red color.

Assuming you run in normal temperatures then a good straight 50 engine oil is what you need. Not 15W-40!

80W-90 gear oil that is straight mineral (GL-1, not GL-5) is allowable too but after having tried it, I don't like the way the shifting feels.

Eaton also sells a special 50 weight synthetic, that lets you go much longer on the oil changes.

For me, I just use Delo 400 straight 50.

On an 85 I'd just mineral 50 or 80/90 sometimes when you run synthetic in an old trans you get lot's of gear noise. If you're in the cold the mineral oil can get thick in the morning and make the range shifter slow until it warms up.

Straight from the Eaton Fuller website:

Type Lubricant
Transmission

Automated
(Except ASW) Synthetic E500 (PS-164R7) 50W 500,000 miles
[800,000Km]
or 5 years 2,000 hours
or 5 years

Mechanical Synthetic E500 (PS-164R7) 50W 500,000 miles
[800,000Km]
or 5 years 2,000 hours
or 5 years

Mechanical Mineral Heavy Duty Engine Oil 30W, 40W, 50W 60,000 miles
[96,000Km]
or 1 year 500 hours
or 1 year

ASW Clutch Synthetic Dextron III ATF N/A 150,000 miles
[250,000Km]
or 3 years 150,000 miles
[250,000Km]
or 3 years

ASW Gearbox Synthetic E500 (PS-164R7) 50W 150,000 miles
[250,000Km]
or 3 years 150,000 miles
[250,000Km]
Notice that with the synthetic 50w gear lube the change interval is 500,000 miles / 5 years / 2000 hours, and with engine oil the change interval is 60,000 miles /1 year / 500 hrs.

Kinda makes the choice a no brainer don't it?
