Lets find the basics first before we make it more complex then it really is.
Is there a Truck manual? if not then are in the correct place asking the pros's lol. =X (not a pro, so Can't help you on that). but did throw my 2 cents on the manual try. :moose:

You can use Roadrangers synthetic transmission oil CD50, or comparable SAE 50 Synthetic Manual transmission oil. Should be a Red color.

Assuming you run in normal temperatures then a good straight 50 engine oil is what you need. Not 15W-40!
80W-90 gear oil that is straight mineral (GL-1, not GL-5) is allowable too but after having tried it, I don't like the way the shifting feels. Eaton also sells a special 50 weight synthetic, that lets you go much longer on the oil changes. For me, I just use Delo 400 straight 50. Birken

On an 85 I'd just mineral 50 or 80/90 sometimes when you run synthetic in an old trans you get lot's of gear noise. If you're in the cold the mineral oil can get thick in the morning and make the range shifter slow until it warms up.
