I never driven a 13spd but you shift the lower gears like a straight 10 then when you go into high range you split the upper gears using the red button, your in 4th and you split the range to go to 5th low, then you split the red button UP to go to 5th high, then flip it down and shift the gear shift to 6th and split the red button UP to 6th high, and etc and etc.

It's an 8 speed. 1-4 there is nothing to decide. You just shift when you need to shift.
5-8 you have the option to use a "half gear" by flipping another button and easing off the throttle (or stepping on it to downshift). That part is more a matter of feel. I only use the button if there is a reason to do so - heavy load, decent incline, etc. Otherwise, I just drive it like an 8 speed. As a matter of habit though, I rarely go from 7th to 8th without going to 7(high) first. That just seems to get me up to speed a little more quickly.

Otherwise yes, that's about right. L - left and back 1 - middle and up 2 - middle and back 3 - right and up 4 - right and back Flip switch 5 - middle and up, side switch in default position 5 high - middle and up, switch forward 6 - middle and back, switch default 6 high - middle and back, switch forward 7 - right and up, switch default 7 high - right and up, switch forward 8 - right and back, switch default 8 high - right and back, switch forward

A 13spd has 5 lower gears, plus 4 upper gears, not counting reverse.
Here's the shift pattern pic:

Ok think I got it 1,2,3,4, flip, 5, flip side switch forward and when speed permits let off acc. and goes into 5 high, flip switch back, and when speed permits go to 6 low, flip switch forward, when speed permits let off acc. and you are in 6 high and etc.... is this right?

You also don't have to run every single gear on the upper side. Remember, the splitter does exactly that - splits the gears. Think of it as 5, 5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2, etc.
If you're running on flat ground with a light load, go directly to the high side of the splitter and stay there. When I ran an 18spd, I did that. I only used the 1/2 gears when going up hills to keep from having to drop a full gear.
